Harold Hawes' ancestors, through his mother Laura Allen, include the Harrison family of Virginia, some of the original settlers of Augusta/Rockingham counties there. In this line, the original immigrant was Isaiah Harrison.
Isaiah Harrison arrived in Oyster Bay, Long Island around 1687/1688. This is documented in Settlers by the Long Grey Trail: Some Pioneers to Old Augusta County, Virginia, and Their Descendants of the Family of Harrison and Allied Lines by John Houston Harrison. Isaiah was apparently given "freeholder" status earlier than was customary as they were in need of a blacksmith. Isaiah died in 1738 while he and three of his sons, Daniel, Thomas, and Samuel, were migrating to what was then Augusta County, Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley.
Daniel Harrison, Isaiah's oldest son by his second marriage to Abigail Smith, was the first settler of Dayton, Virginia. The house he built, also known as "Fort Harrison", was built in 1749, and is a tourist attraction today. The house is on the National Historic Register.
Col. Benjamin Harrison was the second owner of the home built by his father Daniel. In 1778 when Rockingham County was first organized, he was named Lieutenant-Colonel of the militia. Some of the sources identified in the genealogy data suggest this was the Benjamin Harrison who signed the Declaration of Independence. Though they were distantly related (see below), they were different persons.
Three other children of Isaiah Harrison are worth noting:
Mary Harrison was a daughter from Isaiah's first marriage to Elizabeth Wright. She married Robert Cravens, also part of our ancestry.
Thomas Harrison was the founder of Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Abigail Harrison married Alexander Herring, great-grandparents of President Abraham Lincoln.
These Harrisons share an ancestor with the Harrison line that produced Benjamin Harrison V, signer of the Declaration of Independence, his son, President William Henry Harrison, and his great-grandson, President Benjamin Harrison. Isaiah Harrison's father, Rev. Thomas Harrison, and Benjamin Harrison I were brothers. Their father, Richard Harrison, was grandson of John Harrison, a Vicar of York (then Yorkshire), and great-grandson of Thomas Harrison, Lord Mayor of York in 1575 & 1592.
