This is the landing page for research of the ancestry of Irene (Wurster) Hawes. Links to Profiles and Posts are below.
This has been the hardest branch of the family tree to research. Robert Wurster, Irene's father, and his family were all born in Germany. And while German vital records are readily available via the internet, there are complications. Specifically, names!
In the timeframe of Robert's birth, there were a lot - and I mean a lot - of common names. Friederichs, Ernsts, Gottliebs, and many of them Wursters. In 1870 in Wuerttemberg alone, there were over 100 recorded births with the surname Wurster or Wurst. [Source: FamilySearch.org]
Robert's father Friederich first came to the U.S. with his oldest son Ernst. In 1883, when Robert was eight, his father returned to Germany and brought the rest of the family to the U.S. on the ship "Hapsburg". They settled in Indianapolis where Robert married Anna Poppe in 1903. She passed away in 1909. Then in 1910, he married Julia Holtmann, Irene's mother.
The Holtmann family has been even harder to research than the Wursters. Julia's parents, John Holtmann and Caroline Buddenberg, were married in Indianapolis. However so far there has been no evidence of where either were born. Some sites on the internet have suggested he was born in Germany.
The search challenges are not limited to Germany either. For some reason, public records for the state of Indiana are also elusive. Census records are readily available, but death records seem much harder to obtain. Suffice it to say, this branch needs more time!
